Why everyone needs a disruptive ash cloud once in a while
“Having been face up against the window to the high life in New York for the last two weeks I am certainly HUNGRY; I think FOCUS is definitely needed,” Joyce Young, designer and entrepreneur
What would you do if you were stranded in New York for an extra 12 days?
It was the moment when 50,000 UK holiday makers saw their relaxing holiday become a time of stress, but you know the saying ‘every volcano has a silver lining’?
Amongst the 50,000 stranded were Joyce Young and her husband Maurice. They had been invited out on an all expenses paid trip to wow New York with their fashion collection ‘Tartan Spirit’ at the Metropolitan Club, where their clothes were modelled and commissioned.
But when travel chaos erupted along with the Icelandic volcano, Joyce and Maurice found they would not be able to leave New York until the 30th April, giving them an extra 12 days in the city that never sleeps. If you were an entrepreneurial fashion designer what would you do?
No, Joyce didn’t go shopping, her entrepreneurial spirit took over and she got to work. The result was some incredible connections and a high profile New York fashion shoot.
After talking with Alan Brian, Chairman of the American-Scottish Foundation and owner of Carloway Mill, Joyce made some tweed jackets using his fabric and within a matter of days her designer garments were the focus of a glamorous photo shoot in beautiful Central Park.
Joyce and Maurice were invited to see fashion guru and famous New York socialite Doria de la Chapelle, author of Romancing the Plaid. Doria is very enthusiastic about the collection and can’t wait to hear what Joyce’s next step will be.
Joyce even organised a meeting with the SDI about the Centenary celebrations for the Harris Tweed Orb and is currently planning an exciting series of promotional events around the anniversary.
This is one business trip that has not been a wasted journey and will enjoy extensive press coverage once Joyce and Maurice return home.
So, the next time a volcano blocks your path you know it’s time to take a step back, re-focus and get HUNGRY!
